Individual Detail
Subject: Mary Diffley[1],[2],[3]
Father: James Diffley (b. 1854, d. 1933)
Mother: Catherine Kilrane (b. 1857, d. 1932)
Birth: 17 June 1891 Mohill.[4],[5],[6]
Education: __ ___ 1898 Student; Mohill.[7]
Employment: circa __ ___ 1907 It seems most likely that any time spent in Down would have preceded her trips to New York. As her ancestors may have come from that area, it is possible she went to work with/for some distant relative. She may have used the money she earned there to pay for her passage to New York.[8]
Biography: between 1908 and 1924 Mary spent some time in U.S.A. before returning to Leitrim. She spent at least 2 spells there. Mary Jo Dennigan belives there was a third spell though I have not found her on Ellis Island records. When Mary visited the U.S.A., she quoted her Aunt Mary Foley as the person she was going to stay with. The Foley's were related to her on her mother's side. In addition, Mary was the Godmother of one Terry Foley, who went on to become a priest.[9]
Emigration: 11 September 1912 Mary Jo Dennigan remembers her mother Mary telling her she spent 9 years working in America, with a few trips home in between. The only record I've found to date on Mary Diffley entering the U.S.A. dates from 1919, but that does not necessarily contradict Mary Jo's evidence. It is quite possible that there is no record of the first stay, and that 1919 is a date for re-entry.[10],[11]
Descriptn: circa __ ___ 1919 New York; 5'6", with brown hair and brown eyes.[12]
Immigratn: 2 October 1919 Ellis Island.[13]
Name-Marr: 9 June 1924 Doyle[14]
Marriage: 9 June 1924 John Doyle (b. 1886, d. 1975); Mohill; Best man may have been a Reynolds of Clooneagh (John's mother's family) and bridesmaid a Reynolds of Street, Clooncarne. The bride and groom went to the reception in a horse-drawn side-car, and the reception party itself was held in the Doyle house in Clooncarne. For the reception, the bride and groom supplied a half-barrel of porter and lots of soda-bread. The entertainment consisted of music on the accordions.[15],[16]
Anecdote: 10 June 1924 to __ ___ 1926 Bridget Doyle (b. 1894, d. 1978); Mohill; Bridget Doyle was due to marry Tim McDermott in 1924, before her brother John married Mary Diffley. The wedding had to be postponed when Tim's mother died. Bridget was already practicing as a Dressmaker and continued working as such from the house in Clooncarne even after Mary Diffley's arrival.[17]
