John T Reynolds1

M, b. 10 June 1888, d. 5 September 1950
FatherMichael Reynolds1 b. b 20 Sep 1853, d. 30 Apr 1923
MotherAnne Kelligher1 b. b 9 Apr 1854, d. 7 Jul 1944
John T Reynolds was born on 10 June 1888 at Clooneagh, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.2
He was the son of Michael Reynolds and Anne Kelligher.1
He was listed as a son in the household of Michael Reynolds in the 1901 census at Clooneagh, Co Leitrim.3 John T Reynolds was described as 5 foot 9 inches tall after 1910.2 He joined the Royal Irish Constabulary on 16 August 1910 at Ireland.2 He was assigned at Co Monaghan on 1 March 1911.2 He appeared in the 1911 census in the R.I.C. Barracks in Glaslough, Co Monaghan, Ireland. His rank is given as Constable.4 He was assigned to at Co Down on 12 September 1919 Sadly, the date of this record is most unclear, and indeed at first glance the year could be read as '09'. As this does not make any sense, it is assumed it must read '19.2' He was pensioned from the Royal Irish Constabulary on 1 April 1921 at Ireland. A further note states he was assigned a final pension from 1st April 1922.2
He married Elizabeth Conboy, daughter of John Conboy and Anne Beirne, on 27 February 1922 at Bornacoola R.C. Church, Knockadrinan, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. The witnesses were Mary Conboy and John Doyle. When John Doyle married Mary Diffley in 1924, a John Reynolds of Clooneagh acted as 'Best Man'. It seems reasonable to conclude that this was John Tom and it does seem as if they must have been close at this point.5,6 As of circa 1923, John T Reynolds also went by the name of John Tom.7
John T. is said to have been heavily involved in one side of the 'troubles'. It is said that because of his involvement his father, Michael, was shot. It is also thought that it was as an aftermath of his involvement that he did not settle down on the family farm and left it to his brother Joe.8
John was the informant of the death of his father Michael on 30 April 1923.
Michael was shot in his own home in Clooneagh during the 'troubles' and it's thought it was probably because John T was in the R.I.C. It appears that a short time, perhaps a week or two, before Michael was killed, the IRA called to the house one night but ran away when John Tom shot at them from within the house.
Some days later, another raiding party came, and this time they shot through the door. Michael was hit by a ricocheting bullet.9,8,7,10

John T Reynolds was listed as the Land Holder from 1924 to 1930 at Clooneagh, Co Leitrim.11
He witnessed the marriage of John Doyle and Mary Diffley on 9 June 1924 at Bornacoola R.C. Church, Co Leitrim. When John T Reynolds married in 1922, his best man was John Doyle.12,13
John T Reynolds lived after 1930 at The Cottage, Georgia, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. Apparently John T. settled in a small cottage in Rooskey village, roughly where the carpark of the Weir Lodge is in 2008.8,5

John T was widowed when Elizabeth Conboy died 23 July 1942.5

John T Reynolds lived before January 1945 at Rooskey Village, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. According to the reports on the trial of John Bohan in Carrick in April 1946, John T had moved out of his old house in Georgia and settled in Rooskey. This is supported by the evidence of Sean Bohan which was that John T settled in a small cottage in Rooskey village, roughly where the carpark of the Weir Lodge is located in 2014.8,14

On 16 November 1945 at Mohill District Court, John T Reynolds was involved in a court case whereby a John Bohan of Dromodmore was accused of stealing a bicycle that had belonged to John T's wife Lizzie. The accused was found guilty.15 On April 1946 at Carrick on Shannon Circuit Court, John Bohan, who had been found guilty of being in knowing possession of a stolen bike belonging to John T Reynolds appealed his sentence. The appeal was overturned; John T was cross-examined during the trial.14

John T Reynolds died on 5 September 1950 at Ireland at age 62.9,16

John T Reynolds was buried after 5 September 1950 at Cloonmorris R.C. Cemetery, Cloonmorris, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.16

Bernard Kilrane1

M, b. circa 1788, d. 29 August 1900
FatherBernard Kilrane2 b. b 1770, d. 12 Jun 1798
2 He was born circa 1788 at Co Armagh, Ireland. He was reputed to be aged 112 when he died in 1900. If not born in Armagh, he was probably born in County Down.1,2 He was the son of Bernard Kilrane.2
The family probably moved to Leitrim in the wake of the sectarian disturbances in Armagh and Down following The Battle of the Diamond in 1795. It seems that after Bernard senior was executed, a priest, Father Kilrane, Bernard Senior's brother, smuggled Bernard's children to safety in Leitrim, arriving during the build up to the battle of Ballinamuck.2,3,4
Bernard Kilrane witnessed the English Army, under Lord Cornwallis, marching to Ballinamuck via Cloone. The Army was chasing General Humbert and his French troops, together with their Irish allies. The French had made their way from Mayo, the only part of an invasion force that was supposed to support the Irish in the 1798 Rebellion.
The next day the English caught up with Humbert's army at Ballinamuck, and routed it. The French soldiers were allowed to surrender. The Irish were summarily executed on 7 September 1798 at Co Leitrim, Ireland.2
Bernard Kilrane married Mary Shanley after 1830 at Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.2
Bernard Kilrane married Mary Ann Kelly on 15 August 1844 at Longford R.C. Parish, Longford, Co Longford, Ireland. The identification of this as the correct marriage date and place is based on firstly finding a record that so closely matches and secondly the information from Gerry Kilrane that Mary Ann was from Killashee in Longford.5,6,7
Bernard Kilrane lived before 1845 at Tawnamore, Cloone, Co Leitrim, Ireland.8 23 March 1845 "Mr Bernd. Kilbrian" Tawnamore, Co Leitrim was "assaulted by a group of 5 or 6 men for having a loy iron made by a smith who is obnoxious."8 In circa 1845, In the 'Outrages' report, the name is rendered as Kibrian.8
As Ellen Kilrane's father, Bernard presented her at her baptism at Gortletteragh R.C. Church, Gortletteragh, Cloone, Co Leitrim, Ireland, on 20 March 1849. ..9 From, perhaps, as early as 1850, Bernard Kilrane was known as Ould Barney. As he was already in his sixties by this time, nobody could recall him ever being young.2
As Michael Kilrane's father, Bernard presented him at his baptism at Gortletteragh R.C. Church, Co Leitrim, on 21 September 1851. Sponsors were Patrick Murphy (?) and Margaret Downey..5 As Mary Kilrane's father, Bernard presented her at her baptism at Gortletteragh R.C. Church, Co Leitrim, on 30 April 1854. Sponsors were Michael Devine and Catherine Murphy. Michael Devine may have been her uncle by marriage or else a son of her uncles (i.e. her cousin)..10
Bernard Kilrane was listed as a Land Holder on Griffith's Valuation in 1857 at Tawnamore, Co Leitrim. He held 21A 2 R and 38P from Rev. Augustus Crofton and also rented a house to Honor Donnelly. His surname was spelled Kilbrain on the Valuation.11 He was listed on the Cancelled Land Books as the Land Holder between 1857 and 1902 at Tawnamore, Co Leitrim, His surname is spelled Killrain and as the original Land Book shows the 2nd 'l' is written poorly, this might account for the surname 'Kilbrain' on Griffith.12
As Catherine Kilrane's father, Bernard presented her at her baptism at Gortletteragh R.C. Church, Co Leitrim, on 13 July 1857.13 Bernard, as the father of the groom, attended Catherine McGoldrick and Michael Kilrane's wedding at Newtownforbes R.C. Church, Newtownforbes, Co Longford, Ireland, on 21 February 1889.14,15 Bernard Kilrane was also known as Bernard Gilrane. His daughter Catherine's marriage register entry named both of them as Gilrane.1
Bernard was a heavy smoker, almost to the last.3
Bernard Kilrane died on 29 August 1900 at Tawnamore, Co Leitrim. His age at death, on Registrar's records, was 111 years. The cause of death was Old Age. Apparently, the night before he died, Barney, although chatting away normally with the usual callers, sent out to the town for a supply of drink and tobacco. He later died in his sleep.2,3
Bernard Kilrane was buried on 30 August 1900 at Mohill Graveyard, Mohill, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.3

Peter Diffley was born circa 1818 at Clooncarne, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. When Peter died in January 1884, his stated age was 65, which would suggest a birth year of about 1818.1,3 He was the son of John Diffley and Mary unknown.2
Peter Diffley married Mary Murray, daughter of Bryan Murray, before 1846 at Ireland. The date of before 1846 is entered on the basis of a likely child of the couple, Mary, being baptised in 1846.
Note that Bornacoola Marriages from 1837 to 1850 are not online and that Gortletteragh Marriages between 1835 and 1848 do not exist.2

Peter Diffley replaced Bryan Murray as the Land Holder in 1847 at Clooncarne, Co Leitrim. This would suggest that Peter took over his father-in-law's lands, and perhaps also that Bryan had died by that year.4
Peter was listed as a Land Holder on Griffith's Valuation in in 1857 at Clooncarne, Co Leitrim, Peter held Plots 54 (with a house) and 55, consisting of 15 Acres 3 Roods and 34 Perches and 1 Acre and 32 Perches respectively.5 He was listed as the Land Holder in 1860 at Street, Clooncarne, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland, The Cancelled Land Books show that on Griffiths' Valuation this was marked as Plots Numbered 54 and 55 but was renumbered to 31A and 32.6
Peter Diffley died on 25 January 1884 at Clooncarne, Co Leitrim. The cause of death was Chronic Bronchitis, 12 months. The informant was his nephew William Diffley, who was present at the death. Assuming this informant was the son of Thomas Diffley of that name, who was buried in Bornacoola in August 1890, then we have a link that shows Peter and that Thomas were brothers.1,7,3
His estate was probated on 12 September 1884 at Principal Registry, Dublin, Co Dublin, Ireland. Peter's effects were £120.8 He was replaced as the Land Holder between 1885 and 1892 at Street, Clooncarne, Co Leitrim, by Mary Diffley. who we assume to have been his widow.6

Bernard Kilrane was born before 1770 at Co Armagh, Ireland. It is possible he was born in Down.1 He was the son of Unknown Kilrane.2 Bernard Kilrane had more than one child. In the newspaper piece on his son Bernard's death, mention was made of Bernard senior's children. From later investigations, I think he may have had at least 3 children as outlined below.3 He died on 12 June 1798 at Ballynahinch, Co Down, Ireland. Bernard fought under General Munroe in the early battles of the 1798 rebellion. He and his companions were trapped by the informer Newell and later executed after, it is said, the Battle of Ballynahinch. He was hanged from the shaft of a cart. After his death, his home was burned by the British forces.1,4

Patrick McDermott was born circa 1842 at Gortnalamph, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. Patrick's age is consistent on both censuses. No definite trace of his baptism has been found, but the baptism of a Patrick McDermott, father Timothy, and mother Bridget North, took place in Bornacoola on 13th March 1836. I suspect this is a wrongly transcribed Faughnan, but obviously this needs checking and therefore for now at least no change to Patrick's birth details are made.3,4

Mary Ann Kelly was born circa 1821 at Clongesh, Co Longford, Ireland. Her stated age at death in 1876 was 55, which would give a birth year of 1821. She is thought to have been born in Co. Longford, possible in one of the Kilmore townlands (Lower or Upper), in the Civil Parish of Clongesh.1,2,3

Mary Ann Kelly married Bernard Kilrane, son of Bernard Kilrane, on 15 August 1844 at Longford R.C. Parish, Longford, Co Longford, Ireland. The identification of this as the correct marriage date and place is based on firstly finding a record that so closely matches and secondly the information from Gerry Kilrane that Mary Ann was from Killashee in Longford.1,4,5 As of before 1848,her married name was Kilrane.1 Mary, as Michael Kilrane's mother, presented him at his baptism at Gortletteragh R.C. Church, Gortletteragh, Cloone, Co Leitrim, Ireland, on 21 September 1851. Sponsors were Patrick Murphy (?) and Margaret Downey..1 Mary, as Catherine Kilrane's mother, is named on Catherine's baptismal record at Gortletteragh R.C. Church, Co Leitrim, on 13 July 1857.6 As of 17 February 1876, Mary Ann Kelly death register entry is indexed under the surname Gilrain.2 She died on 17 February 1876 at Tawnamore, Cloone, Co Leitrim, Ireland. Her stated age at death was 55, which would give a birth year of 1821. The cause of death was Chronic Hepatic Disease. Note her death is registered as Gilrain.2

After the separation, Frank resided on Dean Street in Brooklyn. It can be seen that the 1930 Census record shows Mary and her children living in Hollis Avenue. This would seem to imply that Mary Ann and Frank Hugh had already separated by then. We can only assume that Frank Hugh entered Mary as resident with him on 80th Street perhaps as a denial of their marital problems. Mary and her sons Robert and George stayed together.
